Hilton Arts Festival, KZN, South Africa

The Hilton Arts Festival
is an annual event where the best of the Grahamstown Festival plays and shows are showcased in Hilton, KZN, South Africa, combined with an art exhibition and a vast array of flea market stalls, set in the splendid grounds and buildings of the prestigious  Hilton College for boys.
Works created by three talented, beautiful women artists caught my attention, and is showcased here.  ***

The artist, Coral Spencer Domijan, who hails from Cowies Hill, KZN, SA.
uses the beach as her canvas. It's a place of connection for locals and tourists in SA.
The use of subtle colours and textures, shadows and poised figures juxtaposed against
shimmering water scenes connecting with gracious skyscapes
lead to my imbibing the spiritual atmosphere of feeling seduced by the sensory pleasure
of water, sand, wind and sun, and the sounds waves lapping, and of seagulls and laughter...

About her Beach Theme -
'Coral is well known for her mastery of light and the human form. “Beaches” presents beautifully composed coastal scenes – a familiar Sunday afternoon,
where random people meet on the shoreline,
all rendered with an expressive looseness that imbues them with emotion and mystery.'

Sharleen Boaden

Sharleen says that she creates impressionistic paintings which reflect her observations and interpretation of various aspects of everyday life.

From a young age she was drawn to the genres of art and literature. Her poems have been featured in three editions of poetry compilations by the Poetry Institute of Africa and her paintings have been showcased in many exhibitions and festivals. In 2010, Sharleen's art was included in the top twenty selling artists out of 55 exhibitors at Pietermaritzburg's Art in the Park.  Her work is represented in selected galleries and her paintings can be found in both local and overseas private collections.

" I put myself - the poetry of who I am - into my art.  I interpret life into art in such a way so as to cause an emotional connection between the painting and its viewer."

Sharleen continues to explore new ways of expression and lives in Durban, South Africa. She
endeavours to capture the emotive quality in the subjects she portrays by 'using a variation of brushstrokes to create movement and life, and by using contrasts of light and colour' in her compositions.  She sees herself as an impressionist, rather than a realist. She prefers the 'the viewer to be drawn by the essence of the subject rather than by it being just a replica of real life'.  She loves painting people in every day scenes, as well as roses, which continue to inspire her.

Sharleen's works are in private collections in South Africa, Ireland, Italy, Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Sweden, USA and the United Kingdom. She values feedback, so please feel free to contact her or subscribe to her newsletter.

Julia Forman
Julia hails from Durban KZN. Born in Pretoria, South Africa, she says that she shares
her 'joie de vivre' through her painting, using oils, inks and acrylics.
Julia, whose art is signed by her
as Guilia
(her Italian name, being representative of her passion for art), states that she is captivated by contrasts.
For her they depict 'the drama of life'.
For Julia it is a thrill to feel as though she is literally 'dropping the sunlight' into her paintings !
See more of her work on www.juliaforman.com.
Julia would love to be followed on her website and to also check her work out in various South African art galleries.

I particularly enjoyed the lively energy in Julia's hens and the empathy displayed in her many African group figure studies, which each tell a story about the lives and plight of rural African people..

I departed feeling uplifted by the energy, verve, passion
and abundance of talent in
my South African home town.
