Heathermeg and Byron's art studio
The Art Bunker can be found on Atkinson Road, just near the buzzing arty village of Titirangi, West Auckland. They frequent the mega artists' hangout and popular eatery; Hardware Cafe in Titirangi, which they refer to as their 'office.'
stimulating creativity to the funky vibe of Titirangi.
Heathermeg describes herself as 'a passionate artist' - and there is no mistaking her passion. It's expressed in her vibrant pieces of work, her boundless energy and her sheer undiluted passion for life. Born in Auckland, Heathermeg's talents emerged at an early age. She created her own cartoon strip which was published in a local newspaper and from the age of six won every poster competition out there. There's been no stopping her since !
Heathermeg worked in an International Advertising Agency, which offered her the fabulous opportunity to engage in some globe trotting assignments. This added to her insight into being able to encapsulate not only a local 'feel' into her work, but to also explore, play with and offer art's more global fabric.Heathermeg admits that the role of mother and artist was challenging and a bit of a juggling act ensued. ' I loved painting as a child ' she added. But painting inevitably took a back seat with a busy career and four children. 'I found myself painting during the wee small hours or fitting it between cooking and cleaning and school homework.'
Twenty years later, Heathermeg is an acclaimed full time artist with International recognition and obviously relishes doing what she loves best. For her, work is play and she's living out her dream; not in faded pastels by any means; but in ebullient full bodied panache. Her favourite medium is acrylic but she also enjoys the rich textures she creates in oils. Clothes, boots and shoes are also transformed into walking pieces of creativity and no stone gets left unturned.
Juxtaposed against Heathermeg's art works are Byron's works of intricate jewellery and ceramics. Byron has been creating jewellery for over thirty years, including silver frames for specs, but for now his focus is the pottery; delightful pieces including vases and fascinating shapes, colours and textures. Byron, like Heathermeg is passionate about his work and exudes large doses of enthusiasm and energy into his creations.
