Parau is a gorgeous little settlement on Huia Road, West Auckland -
on the way from the buzz of Titirangi art village through to sublime Huia
(where we sometimes stop off for yummy fish and chips and an
ice cream at the personable local Huia store.)

Parua boasts its own beach, Armour Bay,
our dog, Paddywag's favourite haunt.

Local artists, writers and musicians have settled in quaint and panoramic Parau, as well as little coves along Manukau Harbour - in Titirangi, Laingholm, Cornwallis and Huia.

Parau has an attractive creative feel about it and artists invariably gravitate to places
where their creative head space can be fueled by visual fodder and a sense of serenity.
Their meeting place is invariably at The Art Post.
On several occasions we'd been dying to pop in, and didn't if we had a car on our tail. But luckily we finally got to stop over, where we got to not only view some of the funky, exciting and stimulating art works by local artists, but to also meet two of Parau's arty community, lovely artist Leonie and her writer friend, Phil.
Some of the artists recently displayed their diverse pieces of work at an exhibition at Lopdell House in Titirangi -
called 'Near & Far - Art from the Art Post Studio Collective, Parau'.
Local artists, musos and lovers of all good things gathered to share the feast of delights from the paintings, ceramics and obj de art, to good music, stimulating dialogue, good wine and tasty breads, pates and nibbles.

Artists work displayed at the exhibition included:-
Eleanor Baker- who says that she grew up in South Wales... ' among the rolling hills, beaches and sheep.' She now lives in Huia 'with the bush, rolling hills and harbour'. Her travelling has been what she describes as 'both a physical and emotional journey', which was first alone and now shared with her husband.

Kym Marsden- who says that she recently felt the need 'to reduce, reuse and experiment with more natural materials.' She incorporates bees wax as she finds that the smell and the knowledge of its past, 'intoxicating.' Kym incorporates local black sand and frames. The 'concoctions of expression' excites her and she adds that she uses words and music ...'to feel my way around an idea, exploring colour, texture and line...' which she combines with photography and poetry 'to explore ideas'.

Leah Wilson - was born in the Waitakere area and returned ten years ago as a young mother. Leah has been painting for twenty years and has work exhibited in private collections overseas and at the Art Post Studio. Leah says  'My love for nature is nearly as strong as my attachment to my children.' She adds that 'Making Peace with the Planet is my offering to the world - planet and people - may we all find peace in the times ahead.'

Leonie Clapham - is an artist and musician. She was brought up in French Bay in the 50's and 60's and has childhood memories 'of playing with clay I found in the stream 'up the back' in the bush where we lived.' She enjoyed the making of wood fired, kickwheel thrown, domestic stoneware in the Coromandel in the 70's and 80's.' Leonie enjoys making decorative wall art, which is fired in an electric kiln to a lower temperature. Leonie says that she 'thrives on the interaction, communication and feedback I experience when selling my art direct to the public.'

Louise Taylor - is a visual and movement artist. She is a graduate from the internationally renowned school for Movement based Expressive Arts Therapy, California. Louise says that she's passionate about movement and expression. Through her art she reflects her connection to the land, ecology, garden, beaches, people and places she loves, which are enhanced by her imagination and feelings.

Marie McNeill - says that she was 'around art from birth.' Her mother, Teresa King sketched and painted landscapes of Manukau Harbour amongst other genres. Fifty years later Marie says ' I still live and am inspired by this wonderful coastline.' The ever changing views from her Cornwallis home evoke her to share and immortalise her love for the environment through photography and landscape art.

Nicky Hartley - says that her paintings 'depict the relationship from Childhood to motherhood and beyond and the dance of life in between. Also the space in between that... the soul journey that takes us from conception through to death.'

Raz- says 'As an artist I try to see the beauty within everything' . Raz is new to the group and says that it's a great place to make friends and to share inspirations.

Ursel Koppelmann - says  ' My partner's passion of keeping bees has also become my hobby.' This theme has been part of Ursel's personal journey in New Zealand, inspired by the great distances bees fly to find nectar for the ongoing health and well- being of the hive and future generations of bees.
